Birthstones, Crystal Alternatives, and a Little Bit of Magic
I've always loved the idea of birthstones.
Not because someone somewhere decided that a specific gemstone belongs to a specific month, but because there is something deeply personal about having a stone that feels connected to your story.
When people visit my crystal shop, one of the first questions they ask is, "What's my birthstone?" But what I love even more is when the conversation shifts from what they're supposed to have to what they're actually drawn toward.
Because here's my little witchy, crystal-loving truth:
The stone that calls to you is often just as important as the stone assigned to your birth month.
Birthstones can be beautiful guides. They carry history, symbolism, and energy that has been passed down through generations. But crystals have a funny way of showing up exactly when we need them, whether they're our birthstone or not.
So let's walk through the traditional birthstones, their spiritual meanings, and some crystal alternatives for those of us who follow intuition just as much as tradition.

January's birthstone is Garnet, a stone of protection, grounding, and strength.

December: Turquoise, Tanzanite, and Zircon
December babies always feel a little like winter magic to me.
And my birthstone? Turquoise. My baby.
Turquoise has always been more than just a stone I was “assigned.” I’m drawn to it in a way that feels instinctive, like something in me recognizes it before my mind can explain why. It reminds me of western skies, country concerts, dusty boots, and that grounded, wide-open feeling of freedom.
But it also carries something much deeper for me.
My grandpa Al was obsessed with turquoise. It was everywhere in his life, especially his ring. The one he wore every single day. That ring is now the last piece of him I have. It’s mine now, and I carry it with me. My piece of turquoise. His piece of turquoise. Our piece of turquoise.
I almost had to fight my mama for it, but in the end, it stayed with me the way it was always meant to.
So when I say turquoise is my baby, I mean it in every way. Birthstone, memory, love, legacy.

What If You Don’t Connect With Your Birthstone?
Here’s something I’ve learned over time, both in crystals and in life:
You don’t have to connect with what you were “given.”
Sometimes you will. Sometimes it fits perfectly. And sometimes it doesn’t feel like you at all.
And that’s okay.
Because I don’t think crystals care what month you were born.
I think they care about where you are right now.
The ones that keep showing up in your life, the ones you can’t stop thinking about, the ones you reach for without even knowing why that’s its own kind of birthstone magic.
So yes, I am a December baby. And yes, turquoise is my birthstone.
But it’s also my memory. My grounding. My reminder. My connection to my grandpa Al.
And that kind of meaning… you can’t assign it on a chart.
You just feel it.
